[23:36] The Achan Syndrome--Besetting Sins [23:36] Tonight we are going to look at the besetting sins that can
sidetrack us from the work of God.
[23:37] These are what some call pet sins for we cuddle them and do not want to give them up.
[23:37] But they do hinder the power of God working in one and it is a daily battle that we have to lay on the altar to God every morning and have Him deal with it.
[23:38] for a example let us look at a story [23:38] A man once kept a pet snake in his house. [23:39] The trouble was it was a rattle snake [23:39] when people came around he would warn them saying that it was dangerous.
[23:40] For when confronted he would always justify his pet by saying.
[23:40] It is mine and it will not hurt me [23:40] for it is a small one that is use to me for I take care of it
[23:41] But one day he took it out and it bit him [23:41] Soon he was feeling the effects of the bite [23:41] as the poison began to take effect [23:42] In agony he died from the bite for it took too long for help to arrive.
[23:42] Now he was warned of the danger [23:42] But he had gotten familiar with it [23:43] and could not see the danger in it [23:43] likewise we all have a pet sin [23:43] and trust it is not harmful to us [23:43] we call it a habit [23:44] or it is a trait [23:44] It is not endangering for it is just part of my life
[23:44] No matter what we call it --to God it is a sin [23:45] And until we recognize it as such [23:45] and deal with it in our lives [23:45] We will never reach the full potential that the Lord has for us
[23:46] If we are to reach the lost effectively then we must handle the besetting sin that we all harbor and protect [23:46] This does not mean one is weak [23:46] it only means we are human [23:47] and as such we have to depend on the Lord to help us in these areas
[23:47] To say we have no sin is to lie to ourselves [23:47] For the truth is we all do and once we recognize it we can deal with it
[23:48] kjv 1 john 1:6-7
1 John 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
[23:48] kjv 1 john 1:8-10 1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
[23:50] From freeing the lost in the world today. [23:51] To hold his captives Satan will try to stop the power of God from working in the lives of His children [23:52] And it is that these besetting sins will keep us from reaching our full potential in Jesus [23:52] And so it is that the achan syndrome is Satan's favorite weapon to stop us in our work for the Lord [23:53] For us to combat this we must first admit to ourselves that we have it in our lives
[23:53] and the we must deal with it by prayer to our Lord for His cleansing touch.
[23:54] As for myself this is the hardest thing I have ever had to do.
[23:54] Daily I see this in my life cropping up and I had for me to admit I have it
[23:55] But I confess to you I have these besetting sins to deal with daily
[23:55] for if I do not they will grow up to harm me [23:55] just as the rattlesnake did to the man in the story
[23:56] But praise God I have the blood of Jesus and His promise to help me to overcome these besetting sins [23:56] Let us look now at achan and see the example he is to us of this problem
[23:57] Achan was with Joshua in the battle of Jericho [23:57] Now the Lord had told Israel that when He gave them the city they were to take nothing from it. [23:57] It was to be totally destroyed [23:58] this Joshua told to the Israelites and drilled it into their heads that they were to take nothing by the lords command [23:59] But when the city fell achan fell into temptation and did not heed the warnings from the Lord [23:59] He took some things from the city and hid them in his tent
[00:00] He had his besetting sin and like all besetting sins he hid from the view of others and kept it in the darkest place of his life
[00:00] Well when Israel went into battle the next time they were defeated
[00:01] this distressed Joshua for before they had entered the land God had said He would go before them and they would win
[00:01] God told Joshua why he had lost the battle [00:01] but Joshua had to find out who it was [00:02] But as all pet sins do if they are not revealed will soon surface on their own and so it was with achan [00:02] when he was confronted by Joshua he finally admitted his secret
[00:02] kjv joshua 7:19-20 Joshua 7:19 And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me. Joshua 7:20 And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done: [00:03] kjv joshua 7:21-22 Joshua 7:21 When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it. Joshua 7:22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it. [00:03] Achan paid for his hidden sin [00:04] it had come back to bite him like the snake did in our story
[00:04] Had he heeded what God had told him he would have had the blessing of the land and received the promise God had made to all of Israel
[00:05] But it did not work that way [00:05] and so he was the first victim of the Achan Syndrome
[00:07] Now for us a little hidden sin in our lives no matter how small we think it may be can kill our spiritual side and stop the power of God from flowing through us and in so doing will keep us from helping others that are lost and need the Gospel [00:07] To witness effectively we have to have the power of God working through us
[00:08] And in truth the Holy Spirit will bring to the surface our besetting sin for us to let God deal with [00:08] For our Lord tells us that [00:09] niv mark 4:22 For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open.
[00:09] Now does these sins mean one is backsliding? [00:09] NO
[00:10] now does this mean one is weak and can not work for God?
[00:10] NO
[00:10] niv 2 corinthians 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. [00:11] niv john 8:34-36
John 8:34 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
John 8:35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.
John 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. [00:12] It is if we will take these pet sins to Jesus in prayer daily He will set us free
[00:12] As I said earlier we are all just mortal and none of us are perfect
[00:12] But glory to God
[00:12] He can take the imperfect and make it perfect through Jesus
[00:12] this is our hope
[00:13] our confidence
[00:13] and our faith in Him [00:13] We must keep working to break these besetting sins
[00:14] It is not by our physical working but by our spiritual working through prayer that we must do this. [00:14] niv Ephesians 4:22-24 Ephesians 4:22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;
Ephesians 4:23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; Ephesians 4:24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
[00:15] this is a daily thing for the child of God [00:15] in order to overcome the world and help to save the lost by presenting Jesus to them in all of His glorious power [00:16] through our lives [00:16] let us go on now
[00:17] Whatever will strengthen your body to take authority over your mind is a besetting sin to you no matter how small it is
[00:17] what are the traits of a besetting sin [00:18] how can we recognize them in our lives [00:18] kjv hebrew 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, [00:19] they are the sins that you do not want reproved [00:19] If something is said that upset your thoughts or ideas
[00:20] or actions then you must take it to the God and let Him check it out and take care of it
[00:20] kjv Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
[00:20] kjv romans 14:23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
[00:21] Is there a habit in your life you are ready to defend?
[00:21] then take it to God [00:21] Is it something you think of the most? [00:22] it is a besetting sin [00:23] the sin in your life that you can make excuses for
[00:23] is a besetting sin [00:24] If it is a action that causes you remorse in your conscious
[00:24] take it to God
[00:24] If there is something in your life that makes you doubt your acceptance with God
[00:25] it is a besetting sin [00:25] If you are unwilling to admit that a habit is a sin in your life
[00:25] then it is a besetting sin [00:25] If you are unwilling to give it up [00:26] even knowing that it is wrong [00:26] then it is a besetting sin [00:26] If it is a sin that you are saying it is a infirmity then it is a sin
[00:26] for example
[00:26] the world says gambling is a disease [00:27] but in truth it is sin [00:27] and all the help in the world will not clear it up
[00:27] Only Jesus can do it [00:27] If it is something you are always trying to justify
[00:27] it is a besetting sin [00:28] Now this is not to be beating anybody up for these problems
[00:28] Remember we all have them [00:28] And the sooner we admit it and get it under the blood of Jesus
[00:29] the sooner we will be seeing the mighty moves of God in our lives and in the lives of those we come in contact with [00:30] It is a shame that some believe that this idea of besetting sins is a chain
[00:30] on their lives
[00:30] but it is that by God revealing this to us [00:30] we can go on and do his work in ways that we have never seen before
[00:31] to water down such a study is tempting to one who gives it
[00:31] I fought a lot today about doing this [00:31] for I did not want to hurt feelings [00:31] but then God showed me [00:31] I had a besetting sin arise [00:32] I wanted to be liked more then I wanted to give His Word
[00:32] I am now having troubles typing this because it is working on me
[00:32] and I hope it is working on you also [00:33] But the truth is that if we are going to reach the lost here on the net
[00:33] and in the world
[00:33] the time has come for us to quit playing around [00:33] and admit our problems [00:33] get them under the blood of Jesus [00:34] and ask for God to forgive us [00:34] not man to but God to [00:34] we each must take these things to God [00:34] it is not for others to make fun of or bring up [00:34] NO ONE IS PERFECT
[00:35] and if we say we are then we are lying to ourselves
[00:35] and worst of all lying to Jesus [00:35] to not admit our besetting sins is to not have confidence in the sacrifice Jesus did for us [00:36] God help me
[00:36] I am a unworthy sinner [00:36] and it is only by Jesus that I have any righteousness
[00:36] He did it for me
[00:36] I did nothing to deserve it [00:37] It is hard for one to admit they have a besetting sin
[00:37] even one we think is too small [00:37] a minor habit
[00:37] but if it is there it interferes with God working in our lives
[00:38] God is there for us all [00:38] it is through Him we can overcome these besetting sins
[00:38] pet sins
[00:39] Is there a besetting sin in your life now? [00:39] It there something you have hid in the tent of your heart like achan
[00:40] Is it something you feel and know is wrong but you justify having it
[00:40] Look into your self and seek it out [00:40] Lay it on the altar of God [00:40] and let Him deal with it [00:41] If it hurts to do so [00:41] believe me God will take the hurt away and give you joy for it
[00:41] He is not condemning you or me [00:41] He is wanting us to come clean to Him [00:42] and when we do this we will see glorious manifestations of His power
[00:42] in our lives and in the lives of those we touch [00:42] Jesus is the answer [00:42] He is our hope
[00:42] He is our strength [00:43] He is our redeemer [00:43] our righteousness [00:43] our advocate to God [00:43] all we have to do is admit [00:43] present it to Him [00:43] repent of it
[00:43] and ask for His forgiveness [00:44] and I know when we do this the power of all of heaven will fall on our lives
[00:44] on our families
[00:44] the power of Heaven will fall in this room [00:44] and His glory will spread all over the Internet and all over the world
[00:45] all it takes is for us to do it [00:45] If you have the courage try this but be ready to feel the power of God
[00:46] in your life making you ready for Him in a way that you can not believe
[00:46] Ask the Holy Spirit to show you what you look like to God
[00:46] Ask Him to show you your weakness [00:46] your pet sins
[00:46] your besetting sins [00:47] it is hard and it is a experience [00:47] but after it is done you will feel His peace like you have never felt before
[00:47] You will feel his love like you never felt it before
[00:48] And you will see the power of God moving in a awesome way
[00:48] This is not legalism [00:48] It is the training for the soldier of God [00:49] so he can be effective in battling the enemy [00:49] If this offended anyone [00:49] that was not my intent [00:50] but this is something that God gave me to give [00:50] to all of you
[00:50] and it is for what ever you want to do with it [00:50] Like I said earlier it hit me hard when I was doing this study
[00:50] and I have been feeling this for 2 days [00:51] and I know now that God is preparing us for a mighty work in His name
