[23:46] amen [23:47] amen [23:47] amen [23:47] amen [23:47] Amen [23:47] Tonight we are going to look at attitudes towards baptism by the different kinds of people who come to it. [23:48] now this is not going to be on whether one is a dunker or a sprinkler in forms of baptism [23:49] no it is going to be about how different people look at baptism when they are confronted with the time to do it. [23:49] we each have a different outlook about baptism when we have to decide on whether to get baptized or not to [23:50] Some will make excuses [23:50] some will try and put it off [23:50] some will try to convince themselves they do not need to [23:50] and some will joyfully go to be baptized when they have heard the word [23:51] tonight from the old testament we are going to see some of these examples of these attitudes from the accounts we have of different times in the Old Testament [23:52] Let us now start on our trip [23:52] the time is when Israel was leaving Egypt [23:53] in the old testament Egypt is a symbol of a sinful world of today [23:53] And Israel is like any freed captive of today that has decided to come to God [23:54] kjv exodus 14:11-13 Exodus 14:11 And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? Exodus 14:12 Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness. Exodus 14:13 And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever. [23:55] In many peoples life when the time comes to get baptized they will listen to others and begin to try and get out of the conviction [23:55] they are afraid to leave the sinful life because they are afraid of changing [23:56] Perhaps they are afraid of losing friends [23:56] or families [23:56] Or they do not want to leave their old life styles [23:57] Satan uses this to try and put a stumbling block before them [23:57] they do not want to die to their old ways [23:58] and when they are confronted by others they begin to fear and would rather stay in their bondage then to be separate and different from others [23:58] just as Israel was when they saw the Egyptians [23:58] they were afraid [23:58] and sadly some turn away from baptism [23:59] kjv exodus 14:21-22 Exodus 14:21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. Exodus 14:22 And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. [23:59] when one goes under in baptism they are crossing over into the new life of being a child of God [00:00] the old is buried in the water [00:00] as the new arises [00:01] and has one steps out of the water the water closes over their old life just as the red sea closed over the Egyptians freeing the Israelites to go to their new lives in following God [00:02] It is a symbolic gesture of one accepting the lord into their lives [00:03] kjv 1 Corinthians 10:1-4 1 Corinthians 10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 1 Corinthians 10:2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 1 Corinthians 10:3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat; 1 Corinthians 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. [00:05] in baptism we are all made one [00:05] in unity [00:05] for example [00:05] in the military there is a family [00:05] of men from many generations past and present [00:05] why is this [00:06] it is because they are all in unity in one thing [00:06] they were all members of the same unit [00:06] as one once said [00:06] a serviceman may die but the regiment will go on [00:07] the regiment is the common thread that binds them altogether [00:07] likewise through Jesus we are all one [00:07] bound together in Jesus [00:07] into one body [00:08] Now some may say is baptism really important [00:08] in this point it is [00:08] for by each of us getting baptized we are letting all know we are all in one accord in the body of Christ [00:09] kjv 1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. [00:09] kjv romans 6:3-4 Romans 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. [00:10] kjv romans 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: [00:10] In baptism we are all one [00:10] one body of Christ [00:10] in one mind [00:10] and in one accord [00:11] when Israel went through the red sea they were all in one body [00:11] following God [00:11] with Moses as their deliverer and leader [00:11] Just as Jesus is our deliverer and leader [00:12] This is the point we must show to others when they come to Jesus [00:12] Baptism is important for this reason [00:12] Let us now go to a second type of person [00:13] when they are faced with baptism [00:13] These kinds we will call Namans [00:13] for like naman they feel that to obey and do what they are showed that they are to choose their own way that is more becoming to them [00:14] These are the people who would not want to baptize themselves in a pond or river [00:14] They would want to choose their own time and their own place [00:14] But does it really matter where one is baptized [00:15] to some it does [00:15] some think it is only in a church [00:15] not a stream [00:15] or a pool [00:15] or any thing that is not formal [00:16] They may not want to do it when the Holy spirit tells them too [00:16] because of the surroundings [00:17] kjv 2 kings 5:9-11 2 Kings 5:9 So Naaman came with his horses and with his chariot, and stood at the door of the house of Elisha. 2 Kings 5:10 And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean. 2 Kings 5:11 But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the LORD his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper. [00:17] kjv 2 kings 5:13-14 2 Kings 5:13 And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean? 2 Kings 5:14 Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean. [00:18] in the old testament leprosy was a symbol of sin [00:19] when naaman realized he was wrong he followed the words of the prophet and was healed [00:19] given a new life with new skin [00:19] from being dead to being alive [00:20] just as baptism is we in baptism cast of the old and start a new life [00:20] At first naaman belittled the words he was given [00:20] and if he had not listened to the servant [00:20] he would have stayed a leper [00:20] but by listening he was renewed [00:21] just as with baptism and us [00:21] some may try to put it off and not answer the call for baptism [00:21] if so we stay in the old [00:21] but if one answers the call of the holy spirit and is baptized he is renewed [00:22] and sometimes it is a child of God that speaks that will help to get the person to come [00:22] so we must not be afraid to tell others of ourselves or about the need for getting baptized [00:23] Now let us go to the new testament [00:23] and meet the example of the person who runs joyously when he is called to baptism [00:23] kjv acts 8:29-31 Acts 8:29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. Acts 8:30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? 5 Acts 8:31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. [00:24] kjv acts 8:32-34 Acts 8:32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: Acts 8:33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. Acts 8:34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? [00:24] kjv acts 8:35-37 Acts 8:35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. Acts 8:36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? Acts 8:37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. [00:24] kjv acts 8:38-39 Acts 8:38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. Acts 8:39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. [00:25] Here we see how when one hears the word they acept bapism and immediately want it [00:26] now let us wind down to the next point [00:27] Some say why should I be baptized [00:27] why should I if I am saved by accepting Jesus [00:27] Is it really that important [00:27] in my walk with God [00:28] why--why-- why [00:28] is what they say [00:28] well the answer is that we are showed by Jesus why [00:28] kjv Matthew 3:13-15 Matthew 3:13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. Matthew 3:14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? Matthew 3:15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. [00:30] kjv Matthew 3:15-16 Matthew 3:15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. Matthew 3:16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: [00:30] Jesus was baptized [00:30] by John [00:30] this is because in the old testament the priest were to be cleansed before they could minister [00:31] they had pools in their temples to walk into to and cleanse themselves before ministering [00:31] Jesus although He did not need to get baptized, he did [00:31] to fulfill the law [00:31] of righteousness [00:32] Jesus started his ministry after He was baptized not before [00:32] this is a important point for us here [00:32] we need to be baptized [00:32] it is important [00:33] if we say we are going to follow Jesus and He is our example [00:33] then we see here that baptism is important in the life of a Christian [00:34] kjv 1 peter 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: [00:34] kjv Galatians 3:26-27 Galatians 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. [00:35] kjv Ephesians 4:4-6 Ephesians 4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; Ephesians 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, Ephesians 4:6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. [00:35] Through baptism we are all in one accord [00:35] one family [00:35] one mind [00:35] and in unity [00:36] so when someone asks is baptism important [00:36] or asks questions [00:36] we must show them that baptism is for all [00:36] God bless you all [00:36] amen
